The moot court team of 3L Jill Smith, 3L Scott Thompson, 2L Amy Herrera and coach Jennifer Ellis '05, director of advocacy programs, won the 2nd place Best Brief Award at the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition. Thompson also won the National Best Advocate Award. This is the first time a Texas Wesleyan student has placed first in this competition. Thompson also won the Best Advocate Award in the preliminary rounds.
The moot court team of 3L Jill Smith (oral advocate), Thompson (writer and oral advocate) and 2L Amy Herrera (writer) won the 2nd place Best Brief Award at the competition, another first for the law school at the national finals. Jennifer Ellis’05, director of advocacy programs, coached the team.
“This is the most talented and hardest working team we have ever had. They worked on the brief and practiced tirelessly for months, and their hard work paid off in spades. It’s a significant accomplishment just to advance to the ABA national finals. The very best moot court teams from every school in the nation hope to make it there. But to achieve such success at the national finals is very rewarding,” Ellis said.
Overall, the moot court team finished the competition as National Quarterfinalists, after defeating teams from Texas Tech University School of Law, the University of Texas School of Law and Florida Coastal School of Law.
