Academic Support Program

Mission

Texas Wesleyan University School of Law is committed to providing students with the skills necessary to achieve academic success. The Academic Support Program is designed to help all students attain their full academic potential, while providing extra assistance to students who need more guidance as they adjust to law school life.

Staff and Duties
The academic support program is staffed by the Director, an adjunct professor, and twelve upper-level law students who serve as teaching assistants. The Director supervises and oversees all aspects of the program. He also counsels and tutors upper- level students who are placed on academic probation by the Academic Standards Committee. In addition, the Director provides general counseling to students of all levels who need additional advice as they navigate their ways through law school.

The adjunct professor of academic support teaches an academic skills class for students who are in danger of not meeting the school’s academic standards or who simply wish to improve their academic performance. The adjunct professor also provides oversight to the teaching assistants and assists the Director as needed.

The teaching assistants are the heart of the first year academic support program. These twelve upper-level students are chosen for their academic achievements as well as for their teaching and mentoring skills. They guide first year law students in every thing from balancing life and law school to conquering law school exams. They lead weekly study groups that cover a variety of skills critical to success in law school, and they provide peer-mentoring to first-year law students.

Practice Exams
In both the fall and spring, the academic support program administers practice exams under actual test day conditions. Professors of first-year subjects frequently create sample exams and answers. Students who take the practice exams receive written critiques from the teaching assistants.

Seminars
Finally, the academic support program puts on several seminars that are of special interest to law students. Topics include an orientation to the structure of the Texas Bar Exam and advice for choosing classes to increase the probability of success on the bar exam. The program also works extensively with bar exam candidates, providing assistance to both first time examinees and re-takers.
