The Texas Wesleyan Law Fellowship Committee is now accepting applications for our summer 2008 fellowship awards. The Texas Wesleyan Law Fellowship is a student run organization that allows students to help many local attorneys and legal programs that are dedicated to providing free or low cost legal services to people in the Dallas Fort Worth community who would otherwise be unable to afford them. Our annual student-faculty auction and Fool’s Night are the Fellowship’s largest fundraisers. Every dollar raised helps fund students’ living expenses while they work in the public interest sector during the summer months. Traditionally, these types of organizations do not pay their summer interns/clerks, so we want to make it a little easier for those that want to do a public interest internship in lieu of a paid clerkship somewhere else.
Due to a limited amount of funds, we require all students that are interested in receiving a fellowship to apply and go through a selection process. The applications are now ready to be picked up. You can find the applications on the law school website on the right hand side of the screen under the Equal Justice Program or Texas Wesleyan Law Fellowship Link; the Texas Wesleyan Law Fellowship Folder in the Student Lounge; or the Texas Wesleyan Law Fellowship square on the bulletin board in the Student Lounge. The applications are due no later than 5 p.m. March 5, 2008, in the slot in student services.
If you are still looking for public interest employers for this summer, there are two great places to look. One is during Public Interest Week, which will be held the week of February 18-20. On February 20, several of those employers will be at the school looking for people to work for them this summer, so you will have the opportunity to try and find a placement that day. The second place to look is on the school website under the Pro Bono link. All of the employers at Public Interest week and on the Pro Bono page are acceptable placements for those applying for a fellowship. Note: If you would like to work at the DA’s office and apply for a fellowship, only two placements at the DA’s office are acceptable; those are the Family Violence Unite and Crimes against Children Unit. No others will be accepted.
We encourage everyone interested to apply. We awarded over $34,000 in fellowships last year, and we expect to award even more this year. Please come to Public Interest Week and learn more about the fellowship as well as work in the public interest sector. Also, mark your calendars for Fool’s Night on Thursday, March 27, 2008.
If you have any questions, please contact Lauren Zettler at l.zettler@gmail.com. She will be your only contact during the selection process and can answer all of your questions about the selection process.
Good Luck!
